According to a report from BET.com, while at the San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend, Marvel Studios revealed that the Oscar winner, Mahershala Ali was cast in the upcoming reboot of the infamous Blade series, originally starring Wesley Snipes.
Mr. Ali will take on the role that was first personified by Wesley Snipes at the end of the 1990s as well as the early 2000s. While Snipes has seemingly been outside of the entertainment industry for the last decade or so, the star has said in 2014 that he’d be open to taking on his role as Daywalker once again.
Despite the fact Marvel has chosen to cast a brand new actor, Wesley Snipes has been very cordial. In a statement released to ComicBook.com, the actor said he was happy with the news, and wished Mr. Ali all the best in his new role.
On the star’s Instagram, Wesley said, “it’s ALL GOOD. Such is the ‘business’ of ‘entertainment!'” Snipes expressed praise for the actor as well, respectfully referring to his Muslim heritage additionally. Blade was first conceived as a character in a supporting role in The Tomb of Dracula, in July 1973.
At the height of the actor’s career, Wesley played Daywalker approximately three times, once in 1998, again in 2002, and once more in 2004. As most know, this marks yet another reboot of a classic series as of late, with studios increasingly relying on old brands for new movies.
At the moment, Lion King from Disney is still crushing it at the box office. This comes after the release of the nearly as successful, Aladdin, starring Will Smith.
In past interviews, the I, Robot actor expressed his anxiety over taking on the role which Robin Williams so brilliantly played in the early 1990s before his tragic death.
The actor told the press that he didn’t intend on merely “replacing” Robin, but instead, taking inspiration from him and making something entirely different.
